Brand
John Tully and Arnis Riekstiņš founded MikroTik in Riga, Latvia, in 1996. A year later it released router software for ordinary PCs that grew into RouterOS, and by 2001 RouterOS had OSPF, BGP and the WinBox management tool. In 2002 MikroTik started building its own boards under the RouterBOARD name. The Cloud Core Router line arrived in 2012 and the Cloud Router Switch line in 2013, and RouterOS v7 went stable in December 2021. Every MikroTik device ships with RouterOS installed and licensed, and the license stays with the device. That makes these boxes popular with home labs and with MTCNA students, MikroTik's own entry certification. Unpatched MikroTik routers were hit by the VPNFilter malware in 2018 and the Meris botnet in 2021, so update and reset any used one before it goes on your network.
