Robert Pera worked at Apple testing Wi-Fi gear before he started his own company, incorporated in California in 2003 as Pera Networks. Its early products brought Wi-Fi internet access to rural areas. In January 2011 it launched UniFi, an enterprise Wi-Fi system run from controller software it gave away free, and it went public that October. EdgeMAX followed in September 2012, starting with the EdgeRouter Lite, running Ubiquiti's own EdgeOS with dynamic routing, firewall and VPN features. UniFi switches arrived around 2015, managed from the same controller as the access points. That split still matters on the used market. UniFi switches expect a UniFi Network controller to set them up, while EdgeRouters and EdgeSwitches are run on their own from a web page or the command line. Either way, a factory reset should clear the last owner's setup.
