Brand
Pradeep Sindhu, a scientist at Xerox PARC, founded Juniper Networks in February 1996. Its first product wasn't hardware. It was Junos, the router operating system released on July 1, 1998, and the M40 core router followed that September. Juniper moved into security by buying NetScreen in 2004, then launched its first enterprise switch, the EX4200, and the SRX family of security gateways in 2008. The same Junos runs across the EX switches and SRX gateways, so a used EX2200 or SRX300 teaches the same commit-and-rollback command line Juniper uses on its biggest routers, which is why JNCIA students buy them. HPE completed its purchase of Juniper on July 2, 2025, and the line is now sold as HPE Juniper Networking. Check which Junos release a used unit runs, and whether the features you want need a license.
