The SRX240 is the 16-port model in Juniper's SRX200 line of branch firewalls, a 1U rack box with four Mini-PIM slots. Juniper's Mini-PIM tables list it from Junos 9.4, released in February 2009. The PoE model powers all 16 ports from a 150 W budget, so in a home lab it's a firewall and a PoE switch in one box. The first H models had 1 GB of memory and 1 GB of flash, and the H2 refresh doubled both to 2 GB. Juniper took the last H2-POE orders in May 2016. It runs the same Junos CLI as Juniper's EX switches and routers, so JNCIA and security students can practice firewall policy, NAT and IPsec on real hardware. Six fans and a 15-inch-deep chassis mean it lives in a rack. Support ended in 2019 for the H and in 2022 for the H2.

License, support, noise and ports
License and feature set
Juniper's SRX240 guide lists firewall and IPsec VPN as core services and UTM (antispam, antivirus and web filtering) as extras, sold as subscriptions. The SRX240 subscriptions on Juniper's dates page (SRX240-S-AV, SRX240-W-EWF, SRX240-APPSEC-A and others) reached end of support by November 30, 2024. Juniper says licenses are bound to the chassis serial number, and chassis clustering needs no separate license.
Software and support
It runs Junos OS. The SRX240H-POE had its last order date on May 10, 2014 and end of support on May 10, 2019. The 2 GB SRX240H2-POE lasted longer, with last orders on May 1, 2016 and support ending December 31, 2022. Juniper's software dates page ties Junos 12.3X48 support for the SRX200 line to November 30, 2024.
Fans and power
Six fans pull air in on the right side and push it out the left, seen from the front. Juniper only states a noise level of under 70 dB(A) per EN ISO 7779. The PoE model averages 86 W before PoE load, from a fixed internal supply rated 360 W.
PoE
All 16 gigabit ports do 802.3af and 802.3at (PoE+), with 150 W across the box and up to 30 W per port. The default per-port limit is 15.4 W, so raise it in the config for PoE+ devices.
Ports and optics
There are 16 gigabit copper ports and four Mini-PIM slots, with no built-in SFP. Juniper's Mini-PIM table includes SFP modules for the SRX240, so look in the photos for fitted modules. Blank covers are normal.
Reset and console
Holding the recessed RESET CONFIG button for 15 seconds or more deletes every config and loads the factory one. A lost root password is reset from the console in single-user mode with boot -s, then recovery. The console is an RJ-45 serial port.
Should come with it
Rack-mounting kit (supplied)
AC power cord (supplied)
DB-9 to RJ-45 console adapter (supplied)
Air filter (optional)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
It boots from internal NAND flash with two root partitions, so it can fall back to a backup Junos image if the primary is corrupted. If it's sold as booting with an alarm, ask for show chassis alarms. Most other trouble is config and missing parts.
01Model: Check the label in the photos. It should read SRX240H-POE or SRX240H2-POE, since plain SRX240H models have no PoE.
02Memory: Ask for the output of show chassis routing-engine. It should show about 1 GB on an H and 2 GB on an H2.
03Software: Ask for the output of show version. A 12.3X48 release is the end of the line for this box.
04Licenses: Ask for the output of show system license. Expect expired or missing UTM subscriptions, and don't pay extra for them.
05PoE: Ask for the output of show poe interface. All 16 ports should be listed with PoE available.
06Fans: Ask for show chassis environment from the running unit. All six fans should report OK.
07Mini-PIMs: Look at the four Mini-PIM slots in the photos. Blank covers are normal, and a fitted SFP Mini-PIM is a bonus.
08Rack kit and power: Look for the rack-mounting kit and power cord in the photos. Juniper shipped both, so a complete listing has them.
09Console and reset: Plan on an RJ-45 rollover console cable. On arrival, holding RESET CONFIG for 15 seconds should load the factory config.
We'd buy iwill4get8's SRX240H2 POE at $90 delivered from Canada, since the H2 has 2 GB of memory and kept its support until the end of 2022. This page is thin, with at least 12 for sale and only three used units from the US and Canada at $77–97 delivered, so the $230–1,150 band isn't a market read. It's set by VAT-inclusive business listings from Germany and Austria with $167–201 shipping, asking $1,004–1,221 delivered for a used or refurbished H2 with a warranty. Juniper's Junos 12.3X48 support for this line ended in November 2024, so keep it in the lab and off your internet connection. Check the label reads SRX240H-POE or SRX240H2-POE, since a plain SRX240H has no PoE, and plan on an RJ-45 console cable.

The lowest delivered SRX240 here, from a US surplus seller, titled with 16 PoE ports and shown with rack ears fitted. The title doesn't give the H or H2 part number and makes no test claim, so ask for the label and show chassis routing-engine to see whether it has 1 GB or 2 GB.
