Juniper launched the EX3400 alongside the EX2300, and both start at Junos 15.1X53-D50. The 24T is the copper version without PoE. What sets it apart is the uplinks. You get four SFP+ ports on the front and two 40G QSFP+ ports on the back, which are Virtual Chassis ports out of the box and stack up to 10 switches. It also has hot-swappable fan modules and a second power supply slot, though Juniper ships it with one supply and a blank cover. MACsec is supported with its own license. For JNCIA and JNCIS study it's a roomier lab switch than an EX2300, with 40G stacking and room for redundant power. Routing still needs licenses, OSPF with an EFL or Flex Advanced and BGP with Flex Premium. Juniper hasn't announced end of life for it, so it still gets current Junos.

License, support, noise and ports
License and feature set
With no license it switches at Layer 2. Juniper's legacy table puts OSPF, VRRP, IGMP, PIM, RPM and virtual routers behind the EFL and IS-IS behind the AFL, while MPLS and EVPN-VXLAN aren't supported on the EX3400 at all. Under Flex licensing OSPF is an Advanced feature, BGP and IS-IS are Premium, and MACsec is its own license (S-EX-MACSEC-C2-P for 24-port models). Licenses are tied to the serial number, so check show system license.
Software and support
It runs Junos OS from 15.1X53-D50 on. Juniper's EX dates page shows no end-of-life notice for the EX3400 hardware as of October 2026, only for some service bundles, so it's still a supported model.
Fans and power
Cooling is two hot-swappable fan modules at the rear plus a fan in each power supply, front to back on the 24T. Juniper says the fans run at moderate speed for minimal noise and speed up if one fails or it runs hot, but it gives no dBA figure. The 24T draws up to 100 W.
Ports and optics
The four front uplinks take 1G SFP or 10G SFP+ optics. The two rear QSFP+ ports run at 40G and are Virtual Chassis ports by default, so you reconfigure them to use them as network ports. Up to 10 EX3400s can form one Virtual Chassis. Optics and QSFP+ cables usually aren't included, so check the photos.
Reset and console
Hold the Factory Reset/Mode button for 10 seconds for the factory default, or run request system zeroize. A lost root password is reset from the console in single-user mode with boot -s, then recovery. The RJ-45 console is on the rear and a mini-USB console is on the front.
Should come with it
One power supply and two fan modules, installed (supplied)
AC power cord and retainer clip (supplied)
Mounting brackets and screws (supplied)
Second power supply (optional)
Four-post rack-mount kit (optional)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Juniper's guide says a failed fan raises an alarm and the others speed up, and the fan modules and supplies are hot-swappable, so a bad one is a part swap. With only one supply fitted you have to power the switch off before pulling it.
01Model: Check the label in the photos. It should read EX3400-24T, not 24P or 48T.
02Hardware: Ask for a photo of show chassis hardware. It should list EX3400-24T, its power supplies and two fan modules.
03License: Ask for the output of show system license. An EFL or Advanced license covers OSPF, and BGP needs Premium.
04Software: Ask for the output of show version. Any current Junos release is fine, since Juniper still supports this switch.
05Power supplies: Look at the rear panel in the photos. Expect one supply and a blank cover, and count a second supply as a bonus.
06Fans: Check that both fan modules are fitted in the photos. show chassis environment should report both fans OK.
07Uplinks and optics: Count the SFP+ and QSFP+ modules in the photos. Expect none, and note the QSFP+ ports start in Virtual Chassis mode.
08Brackets and power: Look for the mounting brackets and power cord in the photos. Juniper shipped both with every switch.
09Console and reset: Plan on an RJ-45 rollover or mini-USB cable for the console. On arrival, a 10-second press of Factory Reset/Mode should load the factory default.
We'd buy juluplus's EX3400-24T with its power cord at $175 with free shipping, about half what the next US seller asks. This is a thin used market, with at least 29 for sale but only a handful of US used ones at $175 to $500 delivered, so the $575 to $1,150 band is mostly new dealer stock, -DC units and European resellers adding $167 to $201 shipping. Read the label for EX3400-24T, since the -DC version needs a -48 V DC supply rather than mains, and ask for show chassis hardware listing the supply and both fan modules; expect one supply, a blank cover and no optics or QSFP+ cables. Juniper hasn't announced end of life, so it still gets current Junos, but OSPF needs an EFL or Flex Advanced license and BGP needs Premium, all tied to the serial, so check show system license. Skip moak24's listing, which shares its title with two other sellers and its photo with one of them.
