Ubiquiti announced its EdgeMAX routers in September 2012 with the EdgeRouter Lite, and the EdgeRouter X followed in 2015 as the small, cheap one. It's a palm-sized, fanless box with five gigabit ports, a dual-core 880 MHz MediaTek chip, 256 MB of RAM and a 5 W maximum draw. It runs the same EdgeOS as the bigger EdgeRouters, so you get static routes, OSPF, RIP and BGP, a zone-based firewall, and IPsec and OpenVPN, with no license to buy. Home-labbers and CCNA students use it as a real router to break and rebuild, and it's just as happy running a home network. Port eth0 takes 24 V passive PoE in and eth4 can pass it on. Watch for the ER-X-SFP, a sibling with an SFP port and PoE out on all five ports. Ubiquiti kept EdgeOS going, too. Version 3.0 arrived in 2025 with WireGuard.

Ubiquiti's EdgeOS 3.0 notes say the ER-X's limited storage can make a firmware upgrade fail, and deleting the old backup image with delete system image fixes it. Otherwise most trouble is the previous owner's config and a missing adapter, not the hardware.

We'd buy gashoppers' open-box ER-X at $95 delivered, about $75 under the new sealed ones, or the same seller's used one at $75, whose photo shows the 12 V adapter. It's a thin used market, with at least 14 for sale and only a handful of US used units under $80, so the $80–190 band is mostly refurbished and new dealer stock. It's fanless, needs no license, and has no console port, so the reset button is how you get back in, at 192.168.1.1 with ubnt/ubnt. Check the label says ER-X, since the ER-X-SFP adds a fiber port and PoE out, and make sure the adapter is in the photos. Skip netrenew's $300 new one when greenlight_electronics asks $170 for a sealed unit.
