MikroTik has been writing RouterOS in Riga since the late 1990s, and the hEX is where a lot of people first meet it. The RB750Gr3 came out in 2016 as an updated hEX, with a dual-core 880 MHz MediaTek MT7621A, 256 MB of RAM, five gigabit ports, a full-size USB port and a microSD slot. It's small and fanless, and it runs on anything from 8 to 30 V, either from the supplied 24 V adapter or passive PoE on port 1. It also has IPsec hardware encryption, which is why so many end up as site-to-site VPN boxes. Home-labbers and MTCNA students buy it because it runs the same RouterOS as MikroTik's big routers, on a Level 4 license that stays with the box. Watch the model code. MikroTik has sold a hEX lite, hEX S, hEX PoE and a newer hEX refresh (E50UG), and they look a lot alike.
Lab check
Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
MikroTik recommends 12 V or more on passive PoE to make up for cable loss, so a hEX that reboots on a long PoE run may just be underpowered. Otherwise most trouble is the previous owner's config and a missing adapter, not the hardware.

Buying guide
We'd buy thetroubleshooter's used hEX at $65 with free shipping, since the photo shows it with the 24 V adapter, or bulk_man's new one at $73 if you'd rather start fresh. There are at least 21 for sale, but most are new stock from US resellers at $72–108 delivered, so the $70–140 band is a new-unit price and used ones run $36–65. The Level 4 RouterOS license is bound to the box and stays with it, and holding reset while you power it up clears the old password, so the real checks are RB750Gr3 on the bottom sticker and the adapter. The hEX lite, hEX S and the newer E50UG look alike, so read that sticker. Skip it-planet-com's at $286 delivered, a business listing from Germany with $167 shipping.
