MikroTik added RB4011 support to RouterOS in late 2018, and it's the obvious step up from a hEX for anyone who wanted ten ports and a 10G uplink without a fan. Inside is the Annapurna Labs AL21400, a quad-core Cortex-A15 that MikroTik also used in its carrier-grade RB1100AHx4, with 1 GB of RAM and 512 MB of NAND. You get ten gigabit ports, one SFP+ cage, IPsec hardware acceleration and passive PoE out on port 10. The RM version comes in a black metal case with rack ears in the box, and there's a sister model with Wi-Fi, the RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN. It ships with a Level 5 license and RouterOS v7. In a home lab it makes a quiet core router with a 10G link to a switch like the CRS326, and it has more than enough for MTCNA and MTCRE practice. Power comes from an external 24 V adapter, so make sure it's in the photos.

License, support, noise and ports
License and feature set
It ships with a RouterOS Level 5 license, which allows 500 PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP tunnels and 500 hotspot users. The license is bound to the device's storage and can't be moved to another device, so it stays with the router on resale. Netinstall doesn't erase it.
Software and support
The product page and manual list RouterOS v7, and MikroTik still builds current v7 releases for ARM. Updates are free for the life of the product or at least five years from purchase, with no contract needed.
Fans and power
Passive cooling, no fan. MikroTik rates it at 33 W maximum with attachments and 18 W without.
PoE
Port 10 gives passive PoE out at up to 57 V, limited to 600 mA at low voltage and 420 mA at high voltage. It isn't 802.3af/at, so only power devices that accept passive PoE. Port 1 takes passive PoE in at 18 to 57 V.
Ports and optics
Ten gigabit ports in two groups of five, each group behind a switch chip, plus one SFP+ cage that takes SFP or SFP+ modules. No module comes in the box, so look in the photos for one in the cage. MikroTik says its S+RJ10 copper 10G module may need extra cooling in passively cooled devices like this one.
Reset and console
Hold reset while you apply power and let go when the green LED flashes to reset the config and password. Hold until the LED goes out (about 20 seconds) for Netinstall. The RJ45 console port is the Cisco-style type and needs a rollover cable, set to 115200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit.
Should come with it
24 V 1.5 A power adapter (supplied)
Rack ears for 1U mounting (supplied)
K-60 screw kit (supplied)
RJ45 rollover console cable (not supplied)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
RouterOS 6.43.13 fixed port 10 failing to negotiate 1 Gbps, and 6.44 fixed SFP+ links at 1 Gbps, so update an old unit before blaming the hardware. Otherwise most trouble is the previous owner's config and missing parts.
01Model code: Check the sticker says RB4011iGS+RM in the photos. A code ending 5HacQ2HnD-IN is the Wi-Fi version.
02Adapter and ears: Look for the 24 V 1.5 A adapter and both rack ears in the photos. Both come in the box new.
03License: Ask the seller for the output of /system license print. It should show level 5.
04RouterOS version: Ask for the version shown in /system resource. It shipped with v7, and any recent v7 release is fine.
05SFP+ module: Check whether a module is in the SFP+ cage in the photos. None come with it new, so plan on buying one.
06PoE out: Ask whether port 10 has powered anything. It's passive PoE only, so it should only feed devices that accept passive PoE.
07Ports: Ask for a photo with all ten ports connected and the unit powered. Every port LED should light.
08Console cable: Get a Cisco-style RJ45 rollover cable for the console port. Set your terminal to 115200 baud, 8N1.
09Reset: On arrival, hold reset while you plug in power and let go when the green LED flashes. The defaults come up at 192.168.88.1 with user admin.
We'd buy thetroubleshooter's used RB4011 at $160 with free shipping, since the photo shows the 24 V adapter, or engineeredseller's sealed new one at $220 with the rack brackets and screws. There are at least 25 for sale and most are new stock. Most used ones ask $140–168 delivered, new US units $210–280, and new imports from Italy, Latvia and Germany $250–413. The Level 5 license is bound to the router and stays with it on resale, so the checks are the sticker, which should read RB4011iGS+RM (a code ending 5HacQ2HnD-IN is the Wi-Fi version), and the 24 V 1.5 A adapter, which the two cheapest leave out. Skip cybertrading_gmbh's at $413 delivered, a VAT-inclusive business listing from Germany with $167 shipping.

The lowest delivered RB4011 here at $140, but it's titled with no adapter, so add a 24 V, 1.5 A supply like the one MikroTik ships. There's no test claim, so ask for the /system license print output showing level 5.
A used RB4011 with its 24 V adapter in the photo, about $50 under the cheapest new one, with free shipping. It isn't titled tested and no rack ears show, so ask whether they're included.
MikroTik RB4011iGS+RM Router 10 Port with 2 CAT-6 Ethernet Cables
Titled new and sealed with the brackets and screws, so everything MikroTik puts in the box should be there, including the 24 V adapter. It's near the bottom of the new asks, with free shipping.
