MikroTik's Cloud Core Router line started in 2012 with the 36-core CCR1036, built on Tilera many-core CPUs. The CCR1009 was the small one, and the CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+ is its updated revision. MikroTik says it folded in three years of feedback since the first CCR1009. The switch chip is gone, so all seven gigabit ports connect straight to a 9-core, 1.2 GHz Tilera CPU. A combo port takes an SFP module or a copper cable with hardware failover, and there's one SFP+ cage. It has 2 GB of RAM, an LCD panel, a SmartCard slot, two AC power supplies for redundancy, two fans and a Level 6 license. Fanless desktop versions were sold as the CCR1009-7G-1C-PC and CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+PC. They're all discontinued now, but MikroTik still builds RouterOS v7 for the Tile chips. For a home lab you get a lot of routing cores and the top license, along with the fan noise of a rack router.

It ships with Level 6, the top RouterOS license, with unlimited tunnels and hotspot users. The license is bound to the router's storage and can't be moved to another device, so it stays with the hardware on resale. Netinstall doesn't erase it.
Software and support
MikroTik lists it as discontinued. Its manual only mentions RouterOS v6, but MikroTik still builds current RouterOS v7 releases for the Tile architecture it uses, so it can run up-to-date software. Updates are free and need no contract.
Fans and power
Two cooling fans, and MikroTik gives no noise figure. Maximum draw is 39 W with attachments and 34 W without. If you want silence, the fanless CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+PC and CCR1009-7G-1C-PC desktop versions use heat pipes instead.
Ports and optics
Seven gigabit ports, a combo port that's one interface with both an SFP cage and a copper port (with hardware failover), and one SFP+ cage. MikroTik says it was its first device to take 100 Mbps fiber SFPs as well as 1.25G modules. Optics aren't included, so check the photos for modules in the cages.
Reset and console
Hold reset while you apply power and let go when the green LED flashes to reset the config, which MikroTik says is the fix for a forgotten password. Hold until the LED goes out (about 20 seconds) for Netinstall. The console is an RS232 serial port rather than the RJ45 type, so you need a null-modem serial cable, at 115200 baud, 8N1.
Should come with it
2 × IEC power cords (supplied)
Rack ears (supplied)
USB OTG cable (supplied)
Null-modem RS232 console cable (not supplied)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
RouterOS 6.41 fixed bogus voltage readings on the CCR1009, so an odd health reading on old firmware may just be the software. Otherwise most trouble is the previous owner's config and missing power cords.
01Model code: Check the label says CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+ in the photos. Codes ending PC are fanless desktops, and 8G models are the older revision.
02Power supplies: Ask whether it's been run on each AC supply alone. It should stay up with either cord unplugged.
03Fans: Ask for a short video of it running, with sound. Both fans should spin steadily without grinding.
04License: Ask the seller for the output of /system license print. It should show level 6.
05RouterOS version: Ask for the version shown in /system resource. MikroTik still builds v7 for this CPU, so an old v6 unit can be updated.
06Optics: Check whether modules sit in the SFP+ cage or combo port in the photos. None come with it new.
07Rack ears and cords: Look for both rack ears and two IEC power cords in the photos. They all come in the box new.
08Console cable: Get a null-modem serial cable for the RS232 console port. Set your terminal to 115200 baud, 8N1.
09Reset: On arrival, hold reset while you plug in power and let go when the green LED flashes. That clears a forgotten password along with the config.
We'd buy jorkofvich's CCR1009 at $213 delivered, since the photo shows it running with both power cords plugged in and the LCD lit. There are at least 18 for sale and most used US ones ask $196–400 delivered, so the $350–625 band leans on dealer and import asks like justinlab's factory-reset unit at $400 and refurbished ones from Germany and the Netherlands at $430–486. It's discontinued, but MikroTik still builds RouterOS v7 for its Tilera chip and the Level 6 license stays with the router. It has two fans, so it belongs in a rack, and its console is RS232, which needs a null-modem serial cable rather than a rollover. Check the label says CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+, since codes ending PC are the fanless desktops, and skip techllc646's $1,200 new one from Bangladesh.
