The 2921 sat in the middle of Cisco's second-generation Integrated Services Routers, the 1900, 2900 and 3900 family, and Cisco's support page dates the 2900 series to October 2009. It's a 2U router with three gigabit ports, one of which takes an SFP. It also has four EHWIC slots for serial, switch or WAN cards, a service-module slot and three PVDM slots for voice. Every unit runs the same universal IOS image, and licenses switch on the IP Base, Data, Unified Communications and Security packages. Those licenses are tied to the router's product ID and serial number, so the show license output in a listing tells you what you're buying. Home-labbers use the EHWIC slots for serial links and the onboard crypto for IPsec labs. It's loud for a home, rated at 54.4 dBA typical. Cisco stopped selling it in December 2017, ended support in December 2022 and named the ISR 4331 as its replacement.
