Cisco's 3560-C compact switches arrived in January 2011, small enough to sit on a desk or mount under one, and the 3560CG-8PC-S is the gigabit PoE version. It has eight gigabit PoE+ ports sharing 124 W, plus two uplinks that take either copper or an SFP. There's no fan, so it makes no sound, which is why it ends up on desks in home labs. The -S means IP Base. Cisco says that adds routed access and OSPF to the layer 2 features, so you can practice inter-VLAN routing and OSPF on real hardware. That's as far as it goes, because Cisco's datasheet says the compact switches can't be upgraded and the 3560-C doesn't take the IP Services image. Cisco stopped selling it in October 2016 and ended support in October 2021. The 3560-CX 8PC-S replaced it, so check which one a listing shows.

License and feature set
The -S means IP Base, which Cisco says adds routed access, MACsec and OSPF to the LAN Base features. Cisco's datasheet says the compact switches can't be upgraded, and the release notes say the 3560-C doesn't support the IP Services image, so IP Base is the ceiling.
Software and support
Cisco's 15.2(2)E release notes cover the 3560-C. Cisco stopped selling it on October 30, 2016, the last maintenance release date was October 30, 2017, security fixes ended on October 30, 2019, and support ended on October 31, 2021.
Fans and power
It's fanless, and Cisco lists it at 0 dB. It draws 24 W at full throughput with no PoE load and up to 165 W with full PoE.
PoE
The internal supply gives 124 W of PoE+ across the eight ports. It runs from AC only, not from PoE.
Ports and optics
The two uplinks each take either a 1G copper cable or a 1G SFP, and optics usually aren't included. Look in the photos for modules if you need fiber.
Reset and console
Cisco's recovery for the 3560 family is to hold the Mode button while you plug in power, then run flash_init and rename flash:config.text. Cisco gives it an RS-232 console port and a mini USB console port.
Should come with it
AC power cord
RCKMNT-19-CMPCT= 19-inch rack brackets (optional)
CMP-MGNT-TRAY= magnet mounting tray (optional)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Most trouble is the previous owner's config and missing parts, not the hardware. Sellers sometimes list IP Services on these, which the 3560-C can't run.
01Model: Read the label in the photos for WS-C3560CG-8PC-S. A 3560CX or an 8TC is a different switch.
02License: Ask for a photo of show version. It should show IP Base, and a listing promising IP Services is wrong.
03PoE: Ask for a photo of show power inline. It should show 124 W available with no faults.
04Uplinks: Look at the two uplinks in the photos for any SFP modules. Empty slots are normal, and the copper side works without optics.
05Mounting: Check the photos for the rack brackets or magnet tray if you need them. Most listings come with neither.
06Power: Check for the AC power cord in the photos. It plugs straight in, with no external brick.
07Console: Try the mini USB or RS-232 console port on arrival. You should reach the boot messages at 9600 baud.
08Password: Ask whether the config has been wiped. If not, the Mode button recovery gets you in from the console.
We'd buy sunrisetechnologies' 3560CG-8PC-S, titled factory reset and pictured with its power cord, at $85 delivered. There are at least 55 for sale, and most ask $80 to $130 delivered, since US sellers mostly ask $60 to $100 and many ship free. It's fanless and silent, which is why home labs put it on a desk, and it gives you 124 W of PoE+ across eight ports plus IP Base for inter-VLAN routing and OSPF, though Cisco says it can't be upgraded past IP Base and support ended in October 2021. Read the label for WS-C3560CG-8PC-S, since the 3560CX that replaced it and the 8TC look alike, and keep a mini USB or RS-232 console cable handy for the Mode button password recovery. Skip minutio's VAT-inclusive refurbished one from Austria at $368 delivered, about four times the typical ask.
