Cisco launched the Catalyst 2960-S in March 2010 as the gigabit step up from the original 2960. The 48LPS-L has 48 gigabit PoE+ ports sharing a 370 W budget, enough for 12 ports at the full 30 W or 24 at 15.4 W, plus four SFP uplinks. The -L is LAN Base, a layer 2 feature set, and the switch runs a universal image that holds LAN Base and LAN Lite. The new trick on the 2960-S was FlexStack, an optional C2960S-STACK module that stacks switches at 20 Gbps. Home-labbers buy it to power a rack of access points and cameras from one 1U box. Cisco rates it at 42 dB typical, and it draws about 71 W before the PoE load. It still runs the 15.2(2)E software that the original 2960 never got. Cisco stopped selling it in November 2015 and ended support in November 2020, and the 2960-X 48LPS-L took its place.
The -L means LAN Base. Cisco ships the 2960-S with a universal image that holds both LAN Base and LAN Lite, and the part number sets which one runs.
Software and support
It runs Cisco IOS from 12.2(53)SE1 onward, and Cisco's 15.2(2)E release notes still list the 2960-S. Cisco stopped selling it on November 6, 2015, the last maintenance release date was November 5, 2016, security fixes ended on November 5, 2018, and support ended on November 30, 2020.
Fans and power
Cisco gives 42 dB sound pressure, typical, at 25°C. It draws about 71 W with no PoE load, and 266 W with half the PoE budget in use.
PoE
The budget is 370 W from the internal supply, which covers 12 ports at the full PoE+ 30 W or 24 ports at 15.4 W. It also accepts a Cisco RPS 2300 for backup power.
Ports and optics
The four uplinks are 1G SFP slots, and optics usually aren't included, so look for modules in the photos. Stacking needs the optional C2960S-STACK FlexStack module, which runs at 20 Gbps.
Reset and console
Cisco's recovery for the 2960 family is to hold the Mode button while you plug in power, then run flash_init and rename flash:config.text to get in without the password. Cisco lists both an RJ-45 console cable and a USB console cable for it.
Should come with it
AC power cord
Rack-mount brackets
C2960S-STACK FlexStack module (optional)
SFP modules (rarely included)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Most trouble is the previous owner's config and missing parts, not the hardware. Check whether the FlexStack module and SFP modules a listing mentions are really in the photos.
01Model: Read the label in the photos for WS-C2960S-48LPS-L. A 2960X is the newer model that replaced it.
02Software: Ask for a photo of show version. It should show the universal image running LAN Base.
03PoE: Ask for a photo of show power inline. It should list 370 W available with no faults.
04SFP optics: Look for SFP modules in the four uplink slots in the photos. Empty slots are normal, so price in optics if you need fiber.
05FlexStack: Check the photos for the stack module in the rear slot if you plan to stack. A blank cover means it isn't fitted.
06Noise: Listen to it on arrival before you rack it. It should settle to a steady hum with no grinding.
07Console: Try the RJ-45 or USB console port on arrival. You should reach the boot messages at 9600 baud.
08Password: Ask whether the config has been wiped. If not, the Mode button recovery gets you in from the console.
We'd buy techsale78's 2960S-48LPS-L, titled tested but with no rack ears, at $55 delivered. There are at least 67 for sale, and most ask $65 to $130 delivered, with US refurbishers like netrenew and netyorker at $80 to $85 including shipping. Read the label for WS-C2960S-48LPS-L, ask for a photo of show power inline listing the 370 W budget (12 ports at 30 W or 24 at 15.4 W), and if you want to stack, look for the C2960S-STACK module in the rear slot, as on pinnaclemicro's $75 listing. Cisco ended support in November 2020, though it still runs the 15.2(2)E software, and at Cisco's 42 dB typical it's one for the rack or the garage. Skip the identical dcrmoto and so_cal_surplus listings, which add $205 and $215 shipping to a US switch.
