The 2810 series comes from the last years of the ProCurve name, with release notes for its N.11 software dated September 2007. HP sold it in two sizes, the 2810-24G (J9021A) and the 2810-48G (J9022A), and both were all-gigabit managed switches, a step up from 10/100 models like the 2610. HP's parts listing describes 20 auto-sensing 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports plus an RJ-45 serial console port, and the other four of the 24 are its uplinks. In April 2010 HP finished buying 3Com and started calling its switch business HP Networking, so later paperwork drops the ProCurve label. For a lab, this is a gigabit switch from the ProCurve era with the classic CLI. We couldn't find HP's noise or power figures for it, so don't buy it expecting silence. Get a video with sound from the seller first, or plan to keep it out of the bedroom.

License, support, noise and ports
License and feature set
We couldn't find HP's feature list for the 2810. Ask the seller for show version and plan on the features of the N.11 release it runs.
Software and support
It runs HP's ProCurve N-series software, and the N.11.04 release notes, dated September 2007, cover the 2810-24G and 2810-48G. We couldn't find a later release or an end-of-support date from HPE.
Fans and power
We couldn't find HP's noise or power figures for the 2810-24G, so we can't tell you how loud it is. Ask the seller for a short video with sound, and listen to it on arrival.
Ports and optics
HP's parts listing describes 20 auto-sensing 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports, and the last four of the 24 are uplink ports. Check the front photo for SFP slots above ports 21 to 24, and expect no optics in the box.
Reset and console
We couldn't find HP's reset steps for the 2810, so ask the seller whether it's been reset and has no password set. HP's parts list for it includes a DB-9 to RJ-45 console cable, and the console port is RJ-45.
Should come with it
DB-9 to RJ-45 console cable
Rack mount brackets and screws
AC power cord
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Most trouble is the previous owner's config and missing parts, not the hardware.
01Model: Check the label in the photos says J9021A. The 2810-48G (J9022A) is the 48-port version.
02Ports: Look at the front photo for the four uplink ports at the right end. Note whether they show SFP slots, RJ-45 or both.
03Software: Ask the seller for a photo of show version. An N.10 or N.11 release is what you should see.
04Noise: Ask the seller for a short video with sound while it runs. We couldn't find HP's noise figure, so hear it before you buy.
05Optics: Look in the photos for SFP transceivers in the uplinks. Most listings have none, so plan on your own.
06Rack ears: Look for the rack brackets in the photos or ask the seller. A complete unit has both ears and their screws.
07Console cable: Ask whether the DB-9 to RJ-45 console cable is included. Any standard RJ-45 console cable works if it isn't.
08Passwords: Ask the seller to confirm it's been reset and has no password. You want to reach the CLI prompt on first boot.
We'd buy fallfax-surplus's J9021A at $34 delivered, titled with rack ears, and the photo shows the ears and a power cord. There are at least 57 for sale and US units mostly ask $34–76 delivered, while the $45–210 band and its $118 median are pulled up by US sellers charging $75–96 shipping and by European and Australian listings at $179–584 delivered. None here is titled tested or reset, so ask for a photo of show version and plan on an RJ-45 console cable to clear the old config. It isn't fanless and we couldn't find HP's noise figure, so ask for a short video with sound before it goes near a desk, and check the label says J9021A, not the 48-port J9022A. Skip vaa666's $584 listing with a 3-year warranty, about 5 times the median.
