The ProCurve 2610 family dates from 2007, when HP's networking division in Roseville, California, still sold everything under the ProCurve name it had filed as a trademark in 1998. The 2610-24 is the plain member of the family, with 24 10/100 ports, two gigabit RJ-45 uplinks and two mini-GBIC slots for SFP optics. Its siblings, the 2610-24/12PWR and 2610-24-PWR, add PoE. For a home lab the plain one has the edge, because HP's install guide lists it with no fans, while the 24-PWR is rated at 56.6 dB. It runs HP's R.11 software and uses an RJ-45 console port with an RJ-45 to DB-9 cable. HP bought 3Com in 2010 and dropped the ProCurve brand, and HPE's parts site says support for this model ended on September 30, 2020. Buy it as a silent Fast Ethernet switch for learning the ProCurve CLI, not for new features.

We couldn't find HP's feature list for the 2610, so we won't promise routing or other extras. Ask the seller for show version and plan on the features of the R.11 release it runs.
Software and support
It runs HP's ProCurve R.11 software, and the R.11.25 release notes cover the 2610-24 and its PoE siblings. HPE's parts site says the J9085A has been unsupported since September 30, 2020, so the release on it now is about as new as it gets.
Fans and power
HP's install guide lists the 2610-24 with no fans, so it's silent. The PoE versions are a different story, with the 2610-24-PWR rated at 56.6 dB sound power.
Ports and optics
There are 24 Fast Ethernet ports, two gigabit RJ-45 uplinks and two open mini-GBIC slots for SFP optics. Look in the photos for transceivers in those slots, because most used units come without them.
Reset and console
Hold Clear for a second to delete the console passwords, and press Reset and Clear together in HP's sequence to restore factory defaults. HP notes the button can be disabled from the CLI. The console port is RJ-45, and the switch shipped with an RJ-45 to DB-9 cable.
Should come with it
RJ-45 to DB-9 console cable (supplied)
Rack mount brackets and screws (supplied)
AC power cord
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Most trouble is the previous owner's config and passwords, not the hardware. Watch for a PWR model listed as the plain 2610-24, because those have fans.
01Model: Check the label in the photos says J9085A. A PWR in the model name means a PoE version with fans.
02Ports: Count the ports in the front photo. You want 24 small ports, two gigabit RJ-45 ports and two mini-GBIC slots.
03Software: Ask the seller for a photo of show version. An R.11 release is what you should see.
04Support: Don't expect new firmware for it. HPE ended support on September 30, 2020.
05Silence: Listen to it on arrival. It has no fans, so it should make no noise at all.
06Optics: Look in the photos for transceivers in the mini-GBIC slots. Most listings have none, so plan on your own SFPs.
07Rack ears: Look for the two rack brackets in the photos or ask the seller. HP supplied them, so a complete unit has them.
08Console cable: Ask whether the RJ-45 to DB-9 console cable is included. Any standard RJ-45 console cable will do if it isn't.
09Reset: Run the Reset and Clear factory reset on arrival. If nothing happens, the buttons were disabled and you'll need the console.
We'd buy klingone78's J9085A titled WORKING! at $59 delivered, right at the median, and the photo shows it plugged in. There are at least 36 for sale, and US units mostly ask $35–90 delivered, so there's no reason to pay more for a 2007 switch that HPE stopped supporting on September 30, 2020. It's the fanless 2610, silent on a shelf, so check the label says J9085A, because PWR in the model name means a PoE version with fans. Whatever a 10/100/1000 title says, it has 24 ports of 10/100 plus two gigabit uplinks and two SFP slots. Skip the Belgian and Dutch listings, where $195–218 shipping turns a $17–59 switch into $212–254 delivered.
