The 2530-24 came out under the HP name, a few years after HP stopped using ProCurve as a brand in 2010 and started calling its switch business HP Networking. HP's 2013 install guide lists twelve 2530 models, from 8-port models up to 48-port gigabit PoE+ ones, and the J9782A is the 24-port Fast Ethernet version. It has 24 10/100 ports, two gigabit RJ-45 ports and two SFP slots. The reason home-labbers hunt for it is the cooling. It has no fans at all, and HP gives its noise as 0 dB, so it can live in a bedroom or a study without anyone hearing it. If you want gigabit on every port, the 2530-24G (J9776A) is the step up, but it has fans and is rated at 34 dB. After HP bought Aruba in 2015 the 2530 line was sold under the Aruba name, and HPE's parts site now calls this one the Aruba 2530 24.
HP 2530-24 (J9782A), later listed by HPE as Aruba 2530 24HP 2530-24G (J9776A), all gigabit, has fansHP 2530-24-PoE+ (J9779A), 10/100 with PoE+, has fans
We couldn't find HP's feature list for the 2530, so we won't promise a feature set beyond what the switch shows. Ask the seller for a photo of show version, and plan on the features of the release it runs.
Software and support
It runs ArubaOS-Switch, and HPE's 16.05 management guide, published April 2018, covers the 2530 family. We couldn't find an end-of-sale or end-of-support notice for the J9782A on HPE's parts site.
Fans and power
It has no fans. HP's install guide lists the 2530-24 with 0 dB noise and no fans, so it's silent on a desk or a bedroom shelf. The gigabit 2530-24G (J9776A) does have fans and is rated at 34.0 dB.
Ports and optics
There are 24 Fast Ethernet ports, two gigabit RJ-45 ports and two SFP slots. Optics usually aren't included, so look in the photos for transceivers in the two SFP slots if you want fiber.
Reset and console
Hold Clear alone for a second to delete the console passwords. For factory defaults, press Reset and Clear together, let go of Reset, and release Clear when the Self Test LED starts to flash. The console is RJ-45 with an RJ-45 to DB-9 cable in the box, and there's a micro USB console port too (cable not supplied).
Should come with it
RJ-45 to DB-9 console cable (supplied)
Rack mount brackets and screws (supplied)
AC power cord
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Most trouble is the previous owner's config and passwords, not the hardware. The Clear and Reset buttons sort that out unless they've been disabled in the config.
01Model: Check the label in the photos says J9782A. The 2530-24G and 2530-24-PoE+ look similar but have fans.
02Ports: Count the ports in the front photo. You want 24 small ports plus two gigabit RJ-45 ports and two SFP slots.
03Software: Ask the seller for a photo of show version. A 16.x ArubaOS-Switch release is what you want to see.
04Silence: Listen to it on arrival with your ear close to the case. It has no fans, so it should make no noise at all.
05Optics: Look in the photos for transceivers in the SFP slots. Most listings have none, so budget for your own if you need fiber.
06Rack ears: Look for the two rack brackets in the photos or ask the seller. HP shipped them with the switch, so a complete one has them.
07Console cable: Ask whether the RJ-45 to DB-9 console cable is included. A micro USB cable also works on the front console port.
08Reset: Try the Reset and Clear button sequence on arrival. The Self Test LED should flash and the switch should boot to factory defaults.
We'd buy lakemichigancomputers' J9782A titled Tested & Reset at $35 with free shipping, less than half the $75 median. There are at least 32 for sale, used ones mostly ask $55–120 delivered, and open-box and new units from US sellers ask $66–690. This is the fanless 10/100 model, silent on a desk or shelf, with two gigabit ports and two SFP slots for uplinks, so check the label says J9782A, since the all-gigabit J9776A and the PoE+ J9779A look alike but have fans. Titles calling it PoE, 30W PoE+ or 24-port gigabit are wrong, because the J9782A has no PoE and only two gigabit ports. Skip shipcycle's $31 unit, whose photo is the one another seller uses for a sealed switch, and the $690 sealed box at more than 9 times the median.
