The 2540 belongs to the Aruba era. HP bought Aruba Networks in 2015, and after HP split that November its own switching was combined with Aruba inside Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Aruba's quick setup guide for the 2540 is dated October 2017 and lists four models, 24 or 48 ports, each with or without PoE+. The JL356A is the 24-port PoE+ one. It has 24 gigabit PoE+ ports and four SFP+ ports that take 1G or 10G optics. That's the reason home-labbers want it. You get 10G uplinks to a server or NAS built in, where a 2920 needs an expansion module for the same thing. Consoles are RJ-45 and micro USB, and the power cord plugs straight into the switch. We couldn't find Aruba's PoE budget, noise figure or power draw for it, so ask the seller for show power-over-ethernet and a short video with sound.
Aruba 2540 24G 4SFP+ (JL354A), no PoEAruba 2540 48G 4SFP+ (JL355A), 48 ports, no PoEAruba 2540 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ (JL357A), 48 ports with PoE+
We couldn't find Aruba's feature list for the 2540, so we won't promise routing here. Ask the seller for show version and check that release's features before you plan a routed lab on it.
Software and support
Aruba's quick setup guide for the 2540 series is dated October 2017. We couldn't find an end-of-sale or end-of-support notice for the JL356A on HPE's parts site, so ask the seller for show version.
Fans and power
We couldn't find Aruba's noise or power figures for the 2540. Ask the seller for a short video with sound, and listen to it on arrival.
PoE
All 24 RJ-45 ports are PoE+, per HPE's parts listing. We couldn't source the total PoE budget, so check show power-over-ethernet before you plan a lot of high-draw devices.
Ports and optics
The four SFP+ ports take 100 Mb, 1G or 10G transceivers, so you get 10G uplinks without an add-on module. Optics usually aren't included, so look in the photos for SFP+ modules or plan to buy your own.
Reset and console
Aruba's quick setup guide doesn't cover the reset buttons, so ask the seller whether it's been reset and has no password set. Consoles are RJ-45 and micro USB, and HP's parts list includes a DB-9 to RJ-45 console cable.
Should come with it
Rack mount brackets, screws and a power cord retention tie
DB-9 to RJ-45 console cable
AC power cord
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Most trouble is the previous owner's config and missing optics, not the hardware.
01Model: Check the label in the photos says JL356A. The JL354A has no PoE and the JL357A has 48 ports.
02Ports: Count the ports in the front photo. You want 24 RJ-45 ports and four SFP+ slots.
03PoE: Ask the seller for a photo of show power-over-ethernet. It should show the PoE budget with no faults.
04Software: Ask the seller for a photo of show version. Note the release, since that sets the features you get.
05Noise: Ask for a short video with sound while it runs. We couldn't find Aruba's noise figure, so hear it before you buy.
06Optics: Look in the photos for SFP+ transceivers. Most listings have none, so budget for your own 10G optics or DAC cables.
07Rack ears: Look for the two rack brackets in the photos or ask the seller. A complete unit has the brackets and their screws.
08Console cable: Ask whether a console cable is included. A micro USB cable also works on the console port.
09Passwords: Ask the seller to confirm it's been reset and has no password. You want to reach the CLI prompt on first boot.
We'd buy fallfax-surplus's JL356A at $117 delivered, titled with rack ears and a power cord, and the photo shows both. There are at least 28 for sale, and US used units ask from $117 delivered, while imports from China, Europe and Australia at $282–665 pull the $140–490 band and its $270 median up. The reason to buy one is the four built-in SFP+ ports for 10G uplinks, but optics are rarely included, so budget for your own SFP+ modules or DAC cables. We couldn't find Aruba's PoE budget, noise figure or reset steps, so ask for show power-over-ethernet, a short video with sound, and confirmation that it's been reset with no password. Skip the $2,950 sealed HPE Renew listing, about 11 times the median, and the $100 unit titled PARTS, only $17 under a working one.

The lowest delivered working JL356A, titled with rack ears and a power cord, and the photo shows both. It isn't titled tested or reset, so ask for show power-over-ethernet and plan on a console cable to clear the old config.
The only one here titled TESTED, and at $230 delivered it's still under the $270 median. The $107 shipping is most of the gap to the cheapest, and the photo shows only the lid, so ask for a front photo with the four SFP+ ports.
